What other art experiences are available?
Parents occasionally ask me this question when they have a child who loves art and would like to have more opportunities to engage in art activities. I am in the process of putting together information about art activities for children outside of school. I will continue to add to this, but I thought I would share what I have so far. Please let me know about any programs you have heard about so that I can add them to my list. |
Deer Valley Unified School District - Community Education Programs. (623) 445-5019. Goelet A. Beuf Community Center. 3435 W. Pinnacle Peak Rd., Phoenix. (602) 534-4754. http://www.phoenix.gov/PARKS/beufcc.html. A wide variety of programs are available for people of all ages. Check their website for information.
Deer Valley Community Center. 2001 W. Wahalla Lane (one block south of Beardsley Rd. and one block west of 19th Avenue), Phoenix. (602) 495-3735. http://www.ci.phoenix.az.us/PRL/dvcc.html. Youth programs include classes in drama, writing, drawing and painting, arts and crafts and sign language.

Glendale Parks and Recreation. Glendale Community Center, 5401 West Ocotillo Road, Glendale. (623) 930-4700. http://www.glendaleaz.org/parksandrecreation/index.cfm. Youth programs (ages 6-12) include a wide variety of free classes and activities. Pick up their Recreation Quarterly Magazine at any Glendale Public Library.
West Valley Art Museum. 17420 N. Avenue of the Arts, (114th Avenue and Bell Rd.), Surprise. (623) 972-0635. http://www.wvam.org/. This wonderful museum offers many classes for children and adults.
Arizona School of Fired Arts. 3434 W. Earll Dr., Phoenix. (602) 272-6585. http://www.marjonceramics.com. A fully-functioning ceramic studio. Classes are available in throwing on the potter's wheel and hand-building clay. Ask about birthday parties or group clay events as well.
A-Z Art Workshops. 29850 N. Tatum Blvd. (SW corner of Tatum and Cave Creek Rd., across from Safeway) (480) 595-2828. Features art workshops for kids (first grade through teen), birthday parties, painting/drawing/studio art, pottery/clayworks/sculpture, and vacation craft workshops (summer camps).
Discover Ceramics. 15610 N. 35th Ave, Suite 3, Phoenix. (602) 547-1394. Class sessions for both the beginner and enthusiast!
The Drawing Board - Family Art Studio. 13832 N. 32 Street #A-7 (North of Thunderbird Rd.), Phoenix. (602) 992-6789. This family studio offers a variety of summer art camps and classes for toddlers (20 months and up) through adults.
Phoenix Art Museum. 1625 North Central Ave., Phoenix. (602) 257-2178. http://www.phxart.org. The museum's studio art program offers classes for children (ages 3-18) and adults. The museum also hosts "Family Sundays," every third Sunday of each month from 1-3 p.m.
Arizona Museum for Youth. 35 North Robson Street, Mesa. (480) 644-2467. http://www.arizonamuseumforyouth.com/. Visitors to the Arizona Museum for Youth are exposed to a wide range of innovative exhibits, delightfully displayed at a child's eye level. Traditional displays of museum-quality artwork are combined with participatory activities which enhance and reinforce the visual experience. If you belong to the Phoenix Public Library, look for a Culture Pass for this museum that will give you four free admissions.

Dedicated to providing an exciting environment for all "family" members, Bonner David Galleries always welcomes children to explore their own talents at their special children's section of the gallery.
